The Permission Revolution: Stop Waiting for a Green Light That Was Always Yours to Give

By Jake Talbert, Author and Founder of The GIVER Method

The Permission Revolution:

Feel stuck, hesitant, or like you’re waiting for someone to approve your next move? This article walks you through the Permission Revolution — and why reclaiming your internal authority is the key to unlocking your gifts, your energy, and your impact.

Have you ever had a moment where you knew exactly what you wanted… but still didn’t act on it?

Not because you weren’t capable.
Not because you didn’t care.
But because you were waiting for someone — anyone — to say,
“Yep, that’s the right move. You’ve got my blessing. Go for it.”

It’s wild how many of us live our lives that way — grown adults, smart and resourceful — still quietly seeking approval before we make the moves that matter most.

If that hits a little too close to home, I want you to know:

You’re not broken. You’re just stuck in something I call The Permission Loop.

And trust me — I lived there too.

The Day I Realized I Was Handing Away My Authority

Years ago, I was in a stable corporate role. From the outside, it looked like I had it all figured out.

But on the inside, I was suffocating.
I had a dream — a business idea, a calling, a whole different way of showing up in the world — that I couldn’t ignore.

And yet… I was frozen.

Not because I didn’t know what I wanted.
But because I was mentally calculating everyone else’s reactions.
What will my mentor think?
What if my wife’s not fully on board?
What if I disappoint my parents?
What if I’m making a mistake?

That’s when it hit me:
I had given everyone else veto power over my life.

People who weren’t going to live with the consequences of my choices were somehow running the show.

That was the day I started what I now call my Permission Revolution.

What Is the Permission Revolution?

It’s not a rebellion. It’s a return.

A return to your own voice.
A return to your values.
A return to the internal green light you were always meant to act on.

Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again — in parents trying to lead their families with more clarity… in entrepreneurs stuck in research mode… in high-performing employees who feel unseen and unfulfilled:

They’re not waiting for more information.
They’re waiting for permission.

And that permission? It was never supposed to come from anyone else.

4 Signs You Might Be Stuck in the Permission Loop

  1. You second-guess your best ideas unless someone validates them.

  2. You delay action until you’ve consulted a mentor, a partner, or your social circle.

  3. You use phrases like “I just need to make sure it’s okay” — even when it already feels right.

  4. You shrink your goals to make others more comfortable.

If any of that sounds familiar, take a breath. This isn’t about shame — it’s about recognition.

Because you can’t change a pattern you don’t know you’re stuck in.

You Don’t Need to Be More Ready. You Need to Be More Rooted.

The biggest shift in my life didn’t come from a certification, a new mentor, or a better plan.

It came the moment I stopped outsourcing my choices and started trusting myself to lead.

And no — that didn’t mean I stopped listening to wise counsel.
It meant I stopped living by consensus.

There’s a difference between seeking insight and giving away your authority.

One makes you wiser.
The other makes you disappear.

The GIVER Method Approach: Internal Permission Unlocks External Impact

When I wrote The GIVER Method, it wasn’t just about generosity.
It was about alignment.
About what happens when you stop contorting yourself to fit other people’s expectations and start living from your unique gifts and values.

Because when you do that?

  • Your energy comes back.

  • Your confidence deepens.

  • Your relationships shift from control to connection.

  • And your influence finally starts to grow — not from force, but from authenticity.

This article only scratches the surface, but in my most recent video, I walk through 8 specific principles to help you spot where you're still waiting for permission and start building real momentum again.
